It isn’t just bread loaves rising at Frank Roberts bakery – we’ve helped health and wellbeing develop too!
Healthy Workplaces Derbyshire spent two days working with the bakery’s workforce on a variety of health and wellbeing support including stop smoking support and NHS health checks.
With three sites and over 750 employees the hardworking team produce 2.1 million loaves per week.
The bakery aimed to become a smoke and vape free employer at their Ilkeston site and, out of approximately 40 site employees, 18 were smokers.
One of the challenges for our team was finding a way for bakery staff on shift patterns to take part in an onsite support offer.
Together our Live Life Better Derbyshire and Healthy Workplaces Derbyshire team and the bakery’s HR team at the bakery worked to find an effective plan to engage the staff.
Over two days, 13 NHS health checks were completed, and 15 staff members were helped with health and wellbeing.
Bakery staff who wanted support to quit smoking were also offered an introduction into Live Life Better Derbyshire’s free support service.
NHS Health checks help to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia and support ways to lower this risk.
The bakery team were pleased with the support they received: “The Live Life Better team have shown our staff that they are a service who clearly care about people and that are interested in working closely within their locality.
“Rather than their HR team ‘preaching’, as a separate company, they asked thought provoking questions without getting anyone’s backs up.
“We would love you to return and carry out the health checks and discuss the stop smoking offer again”
