Why Quit?

Why Quit?

Smoking is the biggest cause of preventable deaths in England and it’s responsible for more than 80,000 deaths each year.

Smoking leads to a wide range of health problems including cancer, coronary heart disease, heart attack, stroke, brittle bones, impotence and fertility problems.

In addition one in two smokers will die from a smoking-related disease.

Find out more about the risks to you, and your family’s health, at NHS Smokefree.

Save money

Smoking is expensive and you might be surprised at how it all adds up. On average most people who quit save around £250 each month.

Why not find out how much you can save by visiting the NHS quit cost calculator.

For your family

Stopping smoking is the best way to protect your family from the dangerous effects of second-hand smoke.

Over 80% of second-hand smoke is invisible and odourless and it contains over 4,000 chemicals.

People who breathe in second-hand smoke are at risk of the same diseases as smokers, including cancers and heart disease.

Breathing in second-hand smoke is especially harmful for children. Children who breathe in second-hand smoke have an increased risk of health problems including:

  • serious breathing conditions such as bronchitis and pneumonia
  • cot death (sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS) – this is twice as likely in babies whose mothers smoke
  • meningitis
  • developing asthma
  • coughs and colds
