Homes and health

Homes and health

Our homes should be comfortable, safe and warm. They are somewhere to raise a family, welcome friends and set us up for whatever life throws at us.

However, research shows that one in five homes are a risk to health and wellbeing with issues particularly coming from poorly heated homes and risks of falls.

Estimates show that poor housing is costing the NHS at least £1.4bn per year.

There’s lots of evidence to show the impact of poor housing on physical and mental health. Examples include:

  • Damp homes can cause respiratory diseases
  • A broken stairwell can lead to trips and falls
  • Cold homes negatively affect children’s educational attainment, emotional well-being and resilience
  • Cold homes increase the risk of accidents and injuries in the home.

We want to make sure that everyone is Derbyshire has safe, secure housing to help them stay in good health and out of hospital.

Healthy homes

The Healthy Home project offers people with a long term health condition help with cold homes. The project helps improve home insulation and heating in order to keep your home warm and you healthy.

You could be eligible for a free new energy efficient boiler, loft or cavity wall insulation or other energy saving measures subject to a survey by one of the Healthy Home team. You’ll receive advice to help you improve the efficiency of your heating system to reduce your fuel bills.

The project also aims to keep you healthy and independent in your own home, and to do this we may offer you services run by other trusted organisations in your area.

To find out if you’re eligible for the project email or call 01629 536919.
