Our homes should be comfortable, safe and warm. They are somewhere to raise a family, welcome friends and set us up for whatever life throws at us.
However, research shows that one in five homes are a risk to health and wellbeing with issues particularly coming from poorly heated homes and risks of falls.
Estimates show that poor housing is costing the NHS at least £1.4bn per year.
There’s lots of evidence to show the impact of poor housing on physical and mental health. Examples include:
- Damp homes can cause respiratory diseases
- A broken stairwell can lead to trips and falls
- Cold homes negatively affect children’s educational attainment, emotional well-being and resilience
- Cold homes increase the risk of accidents and injuries in the home.
We want to make sure that everyone is Derbyshire has safe, secure housing to help them stay in good health and out of hospital.
