Everything is coming up roses for one green-fingered Glossop man after he successfully quit smoking for good.

Richard Holland, aged 43, joined Live Life Better Derbyshire in August 2019 after smoking for nearly 30 years.

Since then he’s saved hundreds of pounds and has completely turned his health around, describing the benefits as ‘massive’.

Rick said:

“I kept getting colds that would turn into chest infections. I was also asthmatic and had mild COPD.

“I thought enough was enough – it’s time to quit.”

Rick’s quit date was 17 August 2019 and he’s not smoked since thanks to the support he’s received, plus a change in his daily routine.

He said:

“I had cravings obviously - they pass quickly but it helped to do things differently and it really helps to keep busy, loading the dishwasher, that sort of thing.

“I also changed my routine. For example if I was on an early shift I would get up, have a cuppa and a couple of cigarettes.

“Now I get up a bit later so there’s less opportunity to do that, let the dog out and have a shower instead of a smoke.”

Live Life Better Derbyshire offers free, flexible help including face-to-face and telephone support. Phone support worked out best for Rick as he works shifts.

He could have a quick chat with his adviser each week and also had the reassurance of knowing she was just at the end of the phone if he needed support.

Rick is already reaping the rewards of stopping smoking. His health and his bank balance are both looking better.

He said:

“I used to smoke roll ups and I estimated that it was costing me about £56 every few weeks.

“So I set up a separate bank account, put that money in there and I am now using it to buy things for an allotment that I have inherited.

“So now I am investing in tools, soil and plants instead of spending on smoking.

“The health benefits have been massive too. I am no longer wheezing - that improved really quickly.

“My teeth are cleaner too and most importantly my asthma has all but disappeared and my COPD has cleared up.”
